Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin, 1889. 530 pp. (incl. index), 6 pp. "A List of the Works of Harriet Beecher Stowe." Frontispiece with tissue guard. 15 black and white plates including 7 family potraits with tissue guards (one of which has a closed tear) and a double page facsimile of pages from Uncle Tom's Cabin. Three-quarter leather over marbled boards, marbled end papers. TEG. Gilt rule and gilt bands and design on spine. Leather is rubbed exposing boards at corners and heavily rubbed at joints and spine, although the gilt is still isible and legible. 3/8" circle of exposed board on front. Spine is reinforced having separated at front hinge. Ffep is tender and has a 3' closed tear at the top. The text block is very good or better, clean and tight throughout. Stowe's son compiled this biography from Stowe's letters and journals with her approval for the project. Stowe (1811-1896) was from a prominent religious family and an ardent abolitionist. Her most famous work, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), propelled the abolitionist movement in America. It was the best-selling American novel of the 19th century and second in sales only to the Bible. The story of her life and her family (both the Beechers and the Stowes) is an important part of 19th century American history.. First Edition. Three-quarter Leather. Good/No Jacket. Thick 8vo.
