The first edition of this work.Complete in three volumes.A collection of eighty-seven letters of the notable scientist Charles Darwin, edited by his son, Francis. Also included is an autobiographical chapter written by Darwin for his family, and an essay, 'On the Reception of the 'Origin of Species'', by Thomas Huxley. The autobiographical chapter was edited to remove the references of Darwin's views on religion.Some of the correspondents in this work includes his wife Emma, his brother Erasmus Alvey Darwin, and his cousins William Darwin Fox, and Sir Henry Holland. Some of the other correspondents are H. W. Bates, Asa Gray, Charles Lyell, John Lubbock, Thomas Henry Huxley, Adam Sedgwick, and more.Volume I with a frontispiece, one plate, and two in-text engravings.Volume II with a frontispiece, and one plate.Volume III with a frontispiece.Collated, complete. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Spines are faded. Light rubbing to the leather, a little heavier to Volume I, with a small amount of lifting to the front joint. A small amount of loss of leather to the rear joint of Volume III. Minor bumping to the extremities. Some light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with the occasional scattered spot. Very Good
