"The volumes contain two sets of heretofore unpublished letters written by General Meade to his wife during his absence from home, while actively engaged in the Mexican and Civil Wars, and a narrative of General Meade's life during the periods not covered by his own writings, together with an account of the battle of Gettysburg." Volume I: 389 pp. Volume II: 432 pages with index. Green cloth covers with gilt lettering on spines. Books have cover corners that are bumped and rubbed to boards, areas of edge rubbed to boards, scuffing to cover faces, creases on spine, spine ends are frayed and torn. Both books are ex. library with similar markings: identification stamps on lower spine edge, bookplate adhered on front inside cover, library stamp on back of frontispiece, embossed stamp on preface/contents page, checkout sheet and security sticker on back free endpaper, barcode and pocket envelope on back inside cover. Foldout maps are complete and are in various conditions: most are clean with minor chipping to edges, browning. Maps in back of Volume 2 have more significant browning/chipping to top edge due to exposure along top page edge. Map 14 in Volume 2 has been torn along crease and is in two pieces. All maps have one or more library stamps on back. Gilt top page edge. Broken hinges. Loose spines. Interior pages are lightly browning along edges, some page corners have creases from being dog-earred, otherwise clean. Books in Good- condition. Scarce to have both volumes of this title.. Cloth.
