About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1900. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 6". Not Stated. A second impression of this biographical work containing the letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, a biologist. Thomas Henry Huxley was an English biologist specialising in comparative anatomy and a strong advocate of Darwin's theory of evolution. The grandfather of Aldous and Julian Huxley, he also coined the term 'agnosticism'. Huxley was an important anatomist, and his contributions to the field are often overshadowed by his sometimes outspoken debates on Darwinism.Edited by Leonard Huxley, the father of Aldous and Julian Huxley. In two volumes. Containing the ownership bookplate of Philip S. Corbet, a British entomologist and expert in Odonata.Volume I is illustrated with four plates and one in-text illustration, volume II with seven plates. Collated, complete. The second impression of this work from November 1900, printed the month following the first. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart; extremities are rather bumped, with some wear to the boards and bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, binding is a little tender throughout, with occasional strain noticeable. Frontispiece is near loose due to the front hinge strain of volume I. Hinges are strained to pages 497 and 1 of volume II Pages are a little spotted to the first and final leaves. Good
