About This Item
Worcester, MA: Isaiah Thomas, Jun, 1802. First American Edition. 12mo (17cm.); publisher's full sheep, red gilt-lettered spine label; viii,[13]-154,[2](ads)pp.; decorative head- and tail-pieces. Leather a bit rubbed along extremities, joints rubbed, with some mild chafing to leather; toning to endpapers, small coin-sized loss at bottom edge of front flyleaf (blank) else Very Good, internally sound and retaining original publisher's advertisements for Whitby's Discourses and Montesquieu's Spirit of Laws.
First American edition of this oft-reprinted anti-Deist polemical tract by Prideaux (1648-1724), which originally appeared in 1697 under the title The true nature of imposture fully display'd in the life of Mahomet. The work was adapted and reprinted frequently, under various titles, throughout the 18th century. This is the first of at least two American editions under this title, though we note an earlier edition (Fairhaven, VT: 1798) under a slightly different title, apparently lacking the "Account of Egypt" (see EVANS 34412). SHAW & SHOEMAKER 2535.
