London - Constable & Company, 1925 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition.. A limited edition offacsimiles of the original first editions of the Robinson Crusoe, from the Selbourne collection. The first Robinson Crusoe storywas originally published anonymously in 1719as the memoir of its protagonist, leading many to believe that it was a true chronicle. It tells the story of a castaway who spends thirty years on a tropical island, encountering cannibals, mutineers, and other perils. The two subsequent works continue his adventures, and were written following the first work's astonishing success. The Robinson Crusoe stories taken as a whole are one of the most popular fictional works in Western literature. By the end of the nineteenth century no book had more editions, spin-offs, or translations. There are estimated to have been more than 700 alternative verisions, including those for children. This edition was printed verbatim fromcopies of the first editions. The illustrations in the first two volumes (Adventures & Further Adventures)are by Stothard and are taken from the popular edition of 1790, again printed in facsimile. The title page from that edition is included in those two volumes. This edition was limited to 750 copies. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: completeCondition: In a cloth binding with gilt detailing and lettering to the spines. Externally very smart indeed, with just very light shelf wear and bumping to the extremities. The edges are untrimmed and as a result a little dusty. Otherwise, however, generally clean and bright throughout and firmly bound. Overall: FINE.
