"The scientist has written of the material achievements of Nikola Tesla. The biographer has dealt with the vital statistics of his life. The occultist has related this man's prophecies to his own mysticism, fully understanding, however, involves the combing of the many facets which compose the personality of this strange genius."
For anyone with an interest in the life story of one of the most influential human beings to ever live this is the ultimate book.
Tesla ranks among the most eccentric people of all time. His eccentricities-- his germ phobia, his passionate interest in feeding the pigeons in Bryant Park, and his caring for crippled pigeons, among many oddities of personality-- are inseparable from his genius. The authors have built well the full story of Tesla. They trace his early beginnings in Yugoslavia, his education, and his early flashes of inventive insight in his first employment in Europe. Upon his coming to America, Tesla soon was employed by Edison and then broke with that other inventor-- and began the great 'battle of currents' which was won so convincingly by the Tesla alternating current, almost without exception used today. This struggle involved such colorful developments as the harnessing of power at Niagara and the lighting of the Columbian Exposition. But Tesla went on: to greater and more startling discoveries and claims. His demonstrations drew enormous crowds in America and Europe; he developed ideas that even now seem to be far-sighted into our scientific future.
Lightning in His Hand is a complete biography of Tesla's life, from his birth in Croatia in 1856 to his death in New York in 1943. Very little of Tesla's life was spent in Colorado, but Hunt and Draper make his time here the crux of their story. After an auspicious early life in Europe, Tesla came to America. He worked for a time with Thomas Edison, but their paths diverged after Edison denied Tesla a promised fifty thousand dollars for his labors. Stunned at this infidelity, Tesla joined with Edison's rival George Westinghouse in the "battle of the currents," pitting Edison and his advocacy of direct current against Westinghouse, Tesla, and their work on alternating current. The winner would determine which flavor of electricity powered America. Well before Tesla came to Colorado Springs, this battle was waged on one important front in Colorado. Westinghouse (using Tesla's patents) built an alternating current plant to provide power to Telluride's Gold King Mine in 1891. It was an early victory for alternating current, and by association, Tesla's genius. His fame grew over the next decade, and by the end of the century, Tesla desired a lab of his own in which to conduct more advanced electrical experiments.
