About This Item

Place_Pub: New York: The Abingdon Press, 1921. fair to good. 233, illus., appendix, chronology, documents, bibliography, index, text somewhat darkened, marker line on title page. Board edges and corners worn, small tear at top edge of spine, spine somewhat scuffed. As counsel for the Illinois State Maine Law Alliance, Lincoln wrote a drastic prohibition State law, which was passed by the legislature in 1855 but failed to pass a referendum in the general election several months later. The author argues that Lincoln was "an ultimate prohibitionist, as he was an ultimate abolitionist." In his conclusion, the author recalls his visit to the White House shortly after Theodore Roosevelt's election in 1904, during which President Roosevelt remarked that he kept a large portrait of Lincoln over his desk for inspiration, and that when confronted with a problem he would look at that portrait and "do as I believe Lincoln would have done."
