Audience: General/trade. LINE OF DEPARTURE; TARAWA BY MARTIN RUSS--COPYRIGHT VINTAGE 1975--HARDCOVER IN DUST JACKET CONDITION GOOD DUST JACKET FAIR HAS SOME EDGE WEAR-PUBLISHED BY DOUBLEDAY AND CO-206 PAGES Martin Russ, a former Marine who served in Korea, describes the battle of Tarawa in World War II. Many lives were lost, on both sides, in the taking of this relatively small and insignificant island, but lessons were learned that would be valuable to the Marine Corps in the taking of other islands in the Pacific during the remainder of World War II. (The title of the ocean is of course ironic, it was given to it by Magellan after his ships emerged from the stormy waters off Cape Horn into the relatively calm waters of that body of water). The description of the battle is graphic and may be disturbing to some readers, but it isn't blood and gore for the sake of blood and gore, it's an accurate description of a bloody battle for the sake of accuracy in the historical record.
