About This Item
New York.: Columbia U.P.. 1974.. xv + 142pp, index, bibliography, glossary, appendices, hardback, colour frontis, little wear to dustjacket extremities, a good copy. The Lion's Roar, or Sri-Mala-sutra, has had a long and remarkably successful career as a Mahayana Buddhist scripture. It became the chief scriptural authority in India for the theory that all sentient beings have the potentiality of Buddhahood, and it was a source of inspiration for the celebrated Lankavatara-sutra. A one-time influential Mahayana scripture in China, it presumably was a source for the classic Awakening of Faith. This work casts new light on Buddhism in South India during the third century A.D. and on an important phase in the development of Mahayana Buddhism. .
