Barwick: "The collection of 8000 [auction] catalogues of English book sales here listed ranges from the sale of the library of Dr. Lazarus Seaman on 31 October, 1676, the first occasion when books were sold by auction in England, to the end of the 19th century. It owes its importance mainly to the long sets of the auctioneers' own copies...."
