London: John Nichols, 1817. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A most handsome set of the full 17 volumes 1817-1858 with engraved plates as called for, frontispiece portrait to volume I just loosening, all as called for some plates folding, all volumes bear the heraldic bookplate of John Clements Waterhouse Madden (1870-1935). This is a clean set only very occasional light spotting, uniformly bound later but not modern by Morrel of London half calf, with red morocco spine labels, richly gilt, some joints repaired, some others slightly cracked. Laid in Volume VIII of History interesting manuscript text of Introduction initialed J.B.N, see image. These are handsomely bound volumes in the complete set of both Nichols' Literary Anecdotes and his sequel Literary History which together provide a comprehensive overview of 18th century Britain's emerging literary trade and its most prominent figures, These are highly significant volumes in the stufy of 18th century literature and enlightenment. This is a multi volume set that needs careful packing so shipping will be at cost. .
