About This Item

"Literary Recreations and Miscellanies" by John Greenleaf Whittier. 1854 1st edition (of only 1,500 copies); Ticknor and Fields; Boston. This is a very unique copy in that a previous owner had tipped-in a number of illustrations which correspond with the content of the associated chapter. There are 8 pages of publisher's advertisements at the back dated September, 1854.

Condition:
The book is a collection of 35 essays - here are a few examples:
* The Black Men in the Revolution and the War of 1812
* Magicians and Witch Folk
* Evangeline
* The Agency of Evil
* Patucket Falls
* Yankee Gypsies
* The World's End
* First Day in Lowell
* Utopian Schemes and Political Theorists
* Peculiar Institutions of Massachusetts
* Fanaticism
* Mirth and Medicine
* The Boy Captives
Some light rubbing of the cloth on the covers; bright gilt lettering on the spine; 1.5" tear at the top-right corner of the spine; wear/cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine; cloth tears at the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Mild foxing to the pages (though heavier on the end papers). The tipped-in pieces do not affect the text...they were inserted as individual pages between the text pages.
