About This Item

Very goodcondition; white fine coating of the front cover has darkenedwith time and shows some soiling mailny to the edges, bookstore markings on the back cover, creases across cover corners, spine and missing piece of the bottom outer corner of front cover were repraired; internally creases across outer corners of the sheets, occasional fingerprints.

Originally the brochure was wrapped in the handmade wrappers, on which front wrapper the title of the book and the name of the author were hand-written in black watercolor by Burliuk (missing in the current copy). Printed on high quality coated stuff, with decorative ribbon binding.

An interesting publication on literary work of Russian poet and artist David Davidovich Burliuk (1882–1967), self-styled "father of Russian Futurism", written by Soviet writer, literay historian and translator Igor Postupalsy (1907-1989) in Leningrad in 1930 for publishing by the Burliuk's own publishing house established with his wife Maria Nikiforovna Burliuk in New York (where Burliuk setteled in 1922 after being forced to flee the harsh conditions of post-Revolutionary Russia). According to Postupalsky: "Burliuk as a poet and as a litterateur in general is the focus of my work…extremely little has been written and said about Burliuk's literary creativity…and most of what has been written and said is wrong." Actually, the monograph was comissioned by Burliuk to raise the losing popularity in Russia and to promote himself in United States as well. In 1930-31 Burliuk publshed in total four writings about himself by Soviet authors Igor Postupalsky, Erikh Gollerbakh, Benedikt Livshits. However, Russian literary critic as well as researcher in Russian Futurism Teodor Grits gave a rather harsh assessment to these writings finding these to be very superficial: "The praises of such people like Gollerbach and Postupalsky can only compromise. What do they have to do with art in general and with futurism in particular?...I am very sorry these books were published."

Book's cover design and illustration by David Burluik, text is decorated with seven amazing avant-garde and modernist drawings by David Burluik.
