London, Warne; New York, Scribner and Co., (1867).. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION circa 1867, dated from inscription on another copy and titles at rear, small 4to, 280 x 185 mm, 11 x 7¼ inches, green cloth, gilt and blind decoration to upper cover, lettered on gilt panel on upper cover, all edges gilt, pages: (6), 19, printed 1 side only. Hand coloured frontispiece and 19 enchanting large HAND COLOURED illustrations by German artist Pletsch depicting young children: playing together and with toys and books, in various moods, bashful, shy, ill humoured etc., each with 8-line verse below. Originally published in Germany mid 1860s. Gilt slightly dull, corners slightly worn, 2 minute nicks to cloth at tail of spine, front inner paper hinge partly cracked, binding sound, small corner cut off front endpaper above a neat early inscription, tiny pink stain on title page, short closed tear to title page margin, short closed tears to lower edge of a few centrefolds, closed tear (80 mm, 3¼") to inner margin of page 18, all tears neatly repaired, occasional pale fingermarks.
