The Little Humpbacked Horse

by Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov

Condition: Good

Moscow: Progress Publishers, 1980. Fourth Printing. Glossy Pictorial Boards. Good. N.M. Kochergin. Translated from the Russian by Louis Zellikoff. Designed by Yiri Kapylov and beautifully ilustrated by N.M. Kochergin. Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov ( 1815-1869) was born in the village of Bezrukovo and later studied philosophy at St Peterburg University, where he wrote his masterpiece fairy tale 'The Humpbacked Horse'. The little horse helps Ivan, a peasant's son, carry out many unreasonable demands made by the Tsar. During his adventures Ivan gets the magic Firebird for the Tsar, keeps his magic horse and finds his love (Princess Elena the Beautiful), and he finally lives happily for many years after. In the mid-nineteenth century censors banned the complete story for more than twenty years because it made the Tsar seem foolish. It was intended to be a satire on the absurdities of Russian feudal and bureaucratic life of the time. Now it is just considered a classical fairy tale.Glossy illustrated boards. Michael Bond - the man behind Paddington Bear

"All the same ... it's a very important name. And I don't expect there are many bears in the world called Paddington!"

A lonely toy bear on an empty shop shelf on Christmas Eve in 1956 first captured the attention of Michael Bond, who kindly shared Paddington with the world.
