About This Item

Miss Muffet's Christmas Party by Samuel McChord Crothers illustrated by Olive M. Long Hardcover First Edition Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company and the Riverside Press, 1902. An illustrated children's book from the very beginning of the 20th century.

Miss Muffet (Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet eating her curds and whey when along came a spider, etc.) has a Christmas party inviting many characters of children's literature: Alice of Alice in Wonderland, the Little Dutch girl Gretchen in her wooden shoes, Aladdin, Tom Sawyer, the Little Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother, even Baron Munchausen, Gulliver of Gulliver's Travels, and the Three Wise Men of the Bible! A nice snap shot into the sensibilities of children's literature at the turn of the last century, circa 1900.

Collation and Condition: Illustrated endpapers showing Miss Muffet as a spider within a web, frontispiece of Miss Muffet and her spider friend, title page, 9 chapters in 107 pages, fully illustrated with about 30 (give or take) illustrations. Generally very good. The book is relatively intact, some aging and dustiness to the boards which is expected, most of the pages are clean with minor aging; not as well used as many children's books from this period. Some dustiness on the blank page after the front endpapers, 1/4" triangular chip to page 1/2, not affecting text, and some repaired tears. Overall a very presentable copy of an uncommon children's book from the Golden Age of Children's Literature.
