About This Item

Seattle: Dogwood Press, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Tall 8vo. Unpaginated. Multi-color floral pattern cloth, titles printed in red on paper label mounted to the cover, deckled fore-edge, hand sewn binding over saddle staples, first text page with watercolor illustration inscribed "to dear Mary Galbraith." Light stains to covers, signature loose on thread, September 2, 1973 Seattle Times Elsa Griffiths obituary clipping attached to front endpaper with transparent tape. Born in Chicago, Elsa settled in Seattle with her physician father Frederick A. Churchill in 1884. She attended Whitman College and the University of Washington and married Stanley Griffiths, owner of a shipping firm. These short poems on nature, thought and family life are set in italic type by Frank McCaffrey.

Very much a Frank McCaffrey production. McCaffrey's book design is usually marked by an element of flowery Victoriana, using colored paper and floral effect to evoke the background of the author, as is obvious here, or an enthusiastic embrace of art deco design. This is a fine example of the former. An increasingly scarce Dogwood Press volume.
