About This Item

Paris.: Editions Sagesse / Librairie Tschann., 1937.. Original publisher's printed wrappers.. Small 4to. (210 x 160 mm).. Title to front wrapper and Espinoza's three poems to interior, printer's credit to rear wrapper; tears to some folds, light spotting to front wrapper. Man Ray's copy with a presentation from Espinoza. From the edition limited to 60 copies, this copy with a presentation to the front cover from Espinoza in black ink: 'à Man Ray / avec l'espoir que le toucheront [? faucheront ?] / ces quelques images / toute la sympathie / Espinoza / Paris 10 Avril'. Espinoza was the pseudonym of the painter and poet Henri Espinouze (1915 - 1982), associated with Surrealism, Espinoza was a friend of Dali and Tanguy and later had a lasting liaison - after the death of Robert Desnos in 1945 - with Yuki, the former model and lover of Foujita who left the painter for Desnos. This copy features pencil sketches to the rear cover; it is tempting to assume that these are by Man Ray. In the Feuillets de 'Sagesse' anthological collection.
