Paris: A. Quantin, 1883. First edition. Front hinge expertly repaired, rear hinge with some rubbing, all else quite fine. First edition. Tall 8vo. [iv], iv, 138p, [i, printer's imprint]. Illustrated throughout after watercolors by Paul Avril in the text and the borders and as vignettes. Pages without watercolors have decorative frames around the text. In an inlaid binding by Kauffmann, the front dentelle signed Kauffmann-Petit. The spine with gilt titles , the panels with designs of umbrellas and flowers in gilt with red inlays, the covers with ornamental ruled borders and with elaborate frames formed of branches with inlaid red flowers with their trailing leaves and vines entwined around the frame, also with three small umbrellas with red inlays. The larger central device is of Cupid with an umbrella riding atop a dragonfly, this with inlays in three colors, ornamental dentelles with floral brocade doublures and flyleaves. Original color wrappers bound in. Housed in morocco lined slipcase of marbled paper over boards. An excellent example of a gilded age binding with the leather bookplate of Alex. M. Hudnut.
