London: Grant & Co., 1872. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Gustave Dore . Bookplate for: Joel Remington Fithian. In Black Ink: To my Husband, Fannie Fithian, December 25th, 1878 Viviy. None Rebound with original covers and Leather 5 banded spine. Well done with 5 raised bands and gilt on leather. This book was originally owned by: Joel Adams Fithian, Major. It was a Christmas gift from his wife Frances Fannie Barrett Connolly. Major Joel Adams Fithian was a Union Army Officer and commanded the 24th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. At some point it entered into the collection of their son Joel Remington Fithian - notable military officer and land developer and one of the most influential inhabitants in Santa Barbara, California. Beautiful gilt and black cover design. Gilt on spine as well. Back cover illustrated with similar design in black. Gilt on 3 page edges, tight binding. Foxed pages throughout.
