Rees 1802 Twenty-second edition of this popular grammar book, which was reprinted up until 1828. While it is thought that the first edition was likely published in London in 1711, the earliest edition ESTC notes is the third edition (1713) with holdings of only three copies, all in the U.K. All early editions are scarce, with ESTC recording fewer than seven copies of each. Contemporary sheep recently rebacked in calf with gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Twelvemo. Title-page with woodcut vignette, initial letters, headpieces, and twenty-five woodcut illustrations. Text printed in two columns, with English on the right and Latin on the left. Binding extremities somewhat worn. Gutter margins of endpapers repaired with cloth tape. Light foxing, margins slightly shaved, just barely touching running headlines of a few leaves. Longman [et al], 1791. 16mo, pp. viii, 123, [1]; 26 woodcuts in the text; original brown buckram; previous owner's name in ink on upper cover and front pastedown (with a date of July 1794), moderate wear and some relatively minor staining; a good, sound copy in an early original cloth binding, often found on textbooks of the last half of the 18th century. A popular school text by the surmaster of St. Paul's School who also compiled an English grammar. The London Vocabulary went through many editions in both England and America, where it was titled the Philadelphia Vocabulary. It is, essentially, an abridgement of Jan Amos Komensky's Orbis Pictura.

Sixteenth edition of Greenwood's earliest published work, an English-Latin vocabulary possibly first printed in 1711. Divided into 33 different categories, most of which carry a woodcut illustration, the vocabulary is presented in double column giving the English and Latin words. All early editions are scarce; the earliest recorded is the third edition of 1713. "The burthening of the Memory with more than is necessary at the Entrance upon any study, is certainly a great Discouragement to the Learner. I have therefore, in the present Vocabulary, avoided every Thing that is not of immediate Use, as Foreign to the Design; and industriously omitted that vast heap of Words with which our common Word Books do so frequently swell" (preface).
