Spine Gilt Bright And Complete Except For Some Rubbing To Publisher's Name At Bottom Of Each Spine. Each Volume With Ownership Signature Of Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy (1863-1945), American Author Of Novels, Poetry, And Plays. Daughter Of Sarah Catherine (Macmurdo) And Col. Alfred Landon Rives, She Was Named After Her Aunt, Amélie, A Goddaughter Of French Queen Marie-Amélie. She Was A Goddaughter Of Robert E. Lee And A Granddaughter Of The Engineer And Senator William Cabell Rives, Us Minister Plenipotentiary To France. Her First Marriage In 1888 To John Armstrong Chandler, A Great-Great-Grandson Of John Jacob Astor, Ended In Divorce. On Feb. 18, 1896 She Married Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy Of The Russian Royal Family, After Oscar Wilde Introduced Them In London. His Painting Of Gladstone Is In The National Gallery At Edinburgh With Many Of His Collection Of Portrait Paintings.She Became Renown As An Authoress, Novelist And Playwright. "The Quick Or The Dead?" (1888), Her First Novel, Which Sold 300,000 Copies, Created More Of A Sensation Than Any Of Her Later Work. Her 1914 Novel, World's End, Was Reputed To Be "The Best Seller In New York City". The Novel, Which Depicts A Newly Widowed Woman Struggling With Her Erotic Passion For Her Late Husband's Cousin, Was Condemned As "Immoral", "Unfit To Be Read", And "Impure". Her Actual Familial Connections Escaped Such Condemnation For No Good Reason We Can Discern.
