London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a two-volume British first edition set with interesting provenance. Churchill's first biographic work concentrates on Lord Randolph's career in Parliament after 1880. Lord Randolph died in January 1895 at age 45 following the spectacular collapse of both his health and political career. His son Winston was 20 years old. When he first contemplated writing his father's biography Winston Churchill was still an itinerant soldier and war correspondent who had yet to write his first book. The son still dwelt very much in his father's shadow, both emotionally and in terms of the political career to which he already aspired.

By the time the work was published in 1906, the young Winston Churchill already had half a dozen books to his credit and half a decade in Parliament. By 1906 Churchill had already left his father's political party, prevailed in the same political battle that had terminated his father's career, and was just two years from his first Cabinet post. Churchill was criticized by some reviewers for overplaying his father's accomplishments. Nonetheless, the work was well received both as a frank portrayal of Randolph's extremes and as a showcase for the son's literary talent.

The first edition is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear. Here is a very good set with interesting provenance. This copy comes to us from the collection of Oscar-winning actor and director Lord Richard Samuel Attenborough (1923-2014). Moreover, the front pastedowns of both volumes bear the armorial bookplates of Henry Arthur Lascelles. Lt. Col. Henry Arthur Lascelles (1842-1913) fought in the Indian Mutiny and in the Ashanti Campaign. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Rifle Brigade. He was invested as a Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.)

The red cloth bindings remain quite respectably bright, with lightly bumped corners, and only modestly faded spines that retain good color and bright gilt. The only noteworthy blemish is a roughly 1.75 x .75 inch spot of moisture exposure and consequent discoloration at the upper rear cover of Volume I at the hinge. The contents are bright with light intermittent spotting throughout.

Description:
Winnipeg: Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company, 1940. 1st Edition. Paperback. This is an exceedingly rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's Address to the Italian People of 23rd December 1940. Broadcasting from the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill sought to assure the Italians of Britain's historic friendship with Italy and place blame for the conflict on Mussolini. Churchill's speech is published here with two others - King George VI's Christmas Day Message of 25th December 1940 and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's Christmas Day message to the Canadian Army. This speech pamphlet is unusual in several respects - its publication, its survival, and its superlative condition. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pages 530-532) the publisher - Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company - was in business from 1902 to 1942. In an exuberant surge of patriotism, the company published over 40 booklets in the "Universal Life for Victory Series", a few of which were speeches… Read More

New York: The British Library of Information, 1940. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This is the first edition, only printing of Churchill's December 23, 1940 address to the Italian People. The end of 1940 found Britain having escaped the imminent threat of invasion, but nonetheless beleaguered and pinning many hopes on the United States, which was still months away from approving the Lend Lease Act and nearly a year from formally entering the war. "With his thoughts focused on the many dangers in the Aegean and Mediterranean, Churchill broadcast on the evening of December 23 to the Italian People." (Gilbert, Volume VI, p.960). The eight-page, wire-stitched pamphlet measures 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm). Condition is near-fine. The paper is bright, clean, and crisp showing virtually no wear. The only flaw is a small .25 inch (.64 cm) roughly circular blemish at the upper right edge of the front cover. The pamphlet is protected within a removable, clear, archival mylar sleeve. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is the second volume of the U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes, of which this is Part II, include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. hough the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Description:
London: The Library of Imperial History, 1974. Hardcover. This is Winston Churchill's first biographic work, the subject of which is his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This lovely edition was produced in very limited numbers using sheets from the 1974 Collected Works that were never bound by the original publisher. This edition contains the full, unabridged text of the 1906 first edition with the added benefit of the author's new Foreword from the 1952 Odhams edition. The result is the superb contents of the Collected Works - printed on 500-year archival paper with gilt top edge - in a heavy, red buckram binding with the Churchill Arms on the front cover. The contents are bound with red and gold head and tail bands and gray endpapers. The binding is far more practical and durable than the vellum in which most Collected Works volumes were originally bound. This copy is in as new condition, the binding and contents pristine with no wear, defects, or previous ownership marks. Winston Churchill’s… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company Limited, 1907. Hardcover. This is the 1907 first one-volume unabridged edition of Winston Churchill’s biography of his father. This copy is more noteworthy for provenance than for intrinsic collectible value. The only previous owner mark in the book is inked in three lines on the front free endpaper recto: “Margaret Moss | Cowichan Station | B.C.” This book belonged to Margaret Johnstone Moss (1871-1937) of Cowichan Station, British Columbia. Margaret is noteworthy both for her accomplishments and for the fact that her history is substantially known – atypical for a woman of her time. During the Boer War Margaret was selected by the British Colonial office to work among the women and children in the concentration camps in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and was later put in charge of educational services there. It was likely here that Margaret met Major Claude Moss, then serving as the deputy assistant adjutant general of the Orange River Colony. They married Dec. 24,… Read More

New York: Macmillan & Co., Ltd., 1906. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the first U.S. edition, only printing, of Winston Churchill’s 1906 biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. This U.S. edition is visually similar but aesthetically superior to its British counterpart, the volumes featuring gilt top page edges and a ribbed cloth binding with gilt and blind rules and the Marlborough Arms in gilt within a double blind ruled front cover panel. This set is in good minus overall condition, sound, complete, and unrestored but showing age and experience. The cloth bindings retain strong red hue and bright spine and front cover gilt, but show moderate overall scuffing, fraying at points to the extremities, and some wrinkling and concavity to the spine cloth, particularly that of Volume I. The contents are notably bright and clean for the edition with no spotting, strong top edge gilt, and clean fore and bottom edges. The same previous owner name, date of “1920”, and… Read More
