About This Item

Sherman, French & Company. Boston. 1911. First Printing., 1911 Pale gray-blue ribbed cloth with front cover and spine gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. 252 pages. 8vo. Literary meanderings on many subjects by a bibliophile of the era (Marvin's life spanned 1847-1918). The eight Chapters include: Love and Letters; The Good Neighbor; Silence; Noble Deeds of Humble Men; The College and Business Life; Old Age; Culture; Vicisti Galilaee. Of the many interesting commentaries in the book the one that caught my eye was about Francis H Leggett who was a wealthy wholesale grocer in the city of New York and who made public the fact that he had not a single college graduate in his payroll of 600 clerks and went on to explain why. Comparing this to Sam Walton of Wal-Mart fame who also declined to employ college graduates makes me wonder if Walton read about Leggett and took his views to heart? Light general wear and soling. A tight copy with a couple of unopened pages. VERY GOOD- Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
