About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1948. First edition of Waugh's short satirical novel about a Los Angeles funeral parlor. Octavo, original boards, marbled endpapers, illustrated by Stuart Doyle. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Ownership inscription. Waugh began writing The Loved One in May 1947, finished the first draft in early July, and completed the novel in September. It was published in its entirety by Cyril Connolly in the February 1948 issue of Horizon and was enthusiastically greeted by readers who thought Waugh had returned to early form with this short comic novel.
