BOOK INFO: See photos for List of Illustrations, subject index and index of structures. Illustrated in B&W photography and maps. 'In spite of the interest in the Maya and the concurrent British possession of a territory where Classic Maya sites might be found, archaeological investigation on more than a personal level was long delayed. From the eighteen-nineties until the mid-nineteen-twenties almost the only fieldwork in the Colony was that carried out by Dr. Thomas Gann, the Medical Officer in Belize. His enthusiasm was not matched by his expertise in either excavation or observation, and in many cases he could only record that another 'burial mound' had been demolished to provide road metal, but for a full-time doctor in an underdeveloped country where sophisticated archaeological techniques were unknown his achievement is remarkable, and his articles and books over nearly half a century from 1895 to 1939 are a valuable record of sites now lost forever. Gann was responsible for the eventual awakening of official archaological interest in British Honduras.' (-from the text). Includes bibliography and index. 48 p. illus., maps, plans, ports. 21 cm.
