UK,slim 8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn.FINE.Neat handwritten,blue ink,familial gift presentation inscrptn and contemporary date (Christmas 1955) to front free endpaper.Bright,crisp,clean, sharp-cornered,publisher's original,dark green/grey(?)+white patterned decorated paper-covered boards,with a maroon cloth blind-spine with gilt blocked lettering; with negligible shelf-wear, bumping,creasing to edges and corners,no nicks,tears,splits or fraying present,clean plain white eps - inscrptn excepted,both hinges solid and sound without any splits or cracking.Top+fore- edges bright and clean; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - could appear unread - apart from my own collation.UK,slim 8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn,9-47pp [paginated] includes story,part and full-page b/w illustrations by Franz Deak, interspersed throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title,b/w illustrated frntis,title page and a dedication.
Commissioned by the London magazine 'The Sketch' in 1953 to write for them a story for their Christmas issue.The story was composed in Tel Aviv,where he was visiting.For that story,Gallico invented the miracle of an underprivileged Alpine cow who had found a mysterious weed in a hidden valley and became a success.Along with 'The Snow Goose' and 'The Small Miracle' this is one of Gallico's best-known and best-loved short story.
