About This Item
London and Toronto: Jonathan Cape, 1930. Lynd Ward (1905-1985) was a socially-aware visionary American artist who created a unique body of work. This is the second of his six novels that have no words - only his beautiful woodcuts tell the dramatic story. His work has been republished by the Library of America, which notes "Madmans Drum (is) a multigenerational saga worthy of Faulkner, (which) traces the legacy of violence haunting a family whose stock in trade is human souls. This is a very Good (Plus) copy of the First English Edition, published in the same year as the American version, and less common. "The text," consisting of 116 woodcut images, is clean, with only some scattered spotting (most noticeable at the endpapers). This copy has been SIGNED by the author/artist on the page opposite the Title Page. Black endpapers and top-edge stain. Paper label on the spine (darkened but not rubbed). The corners are bumped corners and there is some rubbing to the edges; nonetheless, it presents very well. Lacking a dustwrapper; in an archival plastic protector. A high spot in Twentieth Century American literature.. Signed by Author. First UK Edition.. Pictorial Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Lynd Ward. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
