About This Item

Dublin: The Talbot Press, Ltd., 1917. Edward Martyn (1859-1923) was a founder, along with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, of the short-lived but influential Irish Literary Theatre. He wrote several plays, but was also active in politics as President of Sinn Fein (1905-08). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Irish Edition, which is rather uncommon. There is no publication date, but bibliographers seem to agree on 1917. [Initially it was published by Duckworth along with "The Heather Field" in 1899. Quercus believes this to be the first stand-alone publication of the play.] Olive-gray paper-covered boards with abrownish- gray linen spine. Gilt titling on the front cover; black on the spine. Clean text; 51 pages. This is an ASSOCIATION COPY, with the signature on the FFEP of Leslie Matson (1930-2020), an Irish academic who researched and wrote about the Blasket islands. Some spotting at either end of textblock but generally very bright and fresh. One corner is bumped; and there is a slight splay. A solid and attractive copy.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
