About This Item
New York:: Grosset & Dunlap, 1947.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: green 'tweed' binding with series device on the front cover; the top edge tint is yellow; a Very Good book, with a Very Good dust jacket.. 8vo (8.25 inches tall) . Description: Dust jacket art and interior illustrations by Paul Laune. Sean Fitzgerald had brought his bride and his blooded horses to Mare's Nest, his Georgia plantation, just after the Civil War. He had nailed a horseshoe over the threshold as a charm, but it was little protection, for ill luck haunted the house for forty years. All the Fitzgeralds had 'an eye for a horse', particularly Kevin, Sean's young grandson who, nurtured on Gaelic folklore and the Stud Book, dreamed of the Godolphin Barb. Out of Kevin's dreams and desires came the belief that he could find a horse with a white foot, and in his faith is the substance of magic. The dream became reality and the coming of The Magnificent Barb exerted a magic influence on the careless, impoverished Irish family. Dilapidated Mare's Nest roused itself and the old house and stables became alive and vibrant with hope as Sean shared a boy's dream. This is part of the Famous Horse Stories series, with the series device on the spine and front cover.
