About This Item

Wilmington, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Houghton Mifflin, 1996 A beautifully written and very moving children's book ( admit to being a little misty eyed after reading it). The story is set around the old magpie rhyme which tells fortunes by the number of birds seen, "one for sorrow, two for joy. etc." It is unfolded in the correspondence between a young girl and her grandfather and explores profound themes very simply: city, country; people, wildlife; joy and sorrow. Beautifully illustrated by Dan Williams, book is near fine, no writing or marks, clean crisp interior, good corners and binding. DJ is unclipped, has one one inch tear at front lower spine. This is a stated first edition, first printing, full number line. A treasure of a book! ( I note that there is a reissue called Seven for a Secret, which appears to have a different illustrator and perhaps a lighter mood, but I'm not sure that was necessary. Having been raised on stories like Poor Mrs. Quack, The Little Match Girl and a host of terribly sad dog stories, I'm not sure recreational weeping is any less good for children than it is for adults. This book is much more subtle, of course, but still somewhat dark: happy ending though).
