About This Item

E.P. Dutton, New York, 1917 An excellent copy of the first U.S. edition, with the scarce dustcover, book very good plus, dustcover good. Brown paper-covered boards, printed front board label, printed spine label, 7 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches, 84 pp., numerous b/w cartoon illustrations by W. Tell (after John Tenniel). Book very good plus (mildly bumped upper corners of boards; pages clean, with no marks of any kind; binding tight and square). Dustcover good (front and rear panels recapitulate the front board illustration; 7/8 x 5/8 inch rectangular segment of spine missing; moderate edgewear, with a few small chips; a few short closed tears; browning of spine). Dustcover defects described in detail; still attractive; now in mylar jacket. An entertaining satire of World War I German propaganda employing a parody of Alice in Wonderland. "'Twas dertag, and the slithy Huns / Did strum and sturgel through the sludge; / All bulgous were the blunderguns, / And the bosch bombs outbludge." "And as in uffish thought he stood, / The Kaiserhog, with eyes of flame, / Came prumpling through the tulgey wood, / And blasphied as he came!". (K075). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.
