This would appear to be a "special" edition as unusually the background to the plates has also been coloured, rendering the plates superior to the standard (and usual) edition where it is just the subject that has been coloured. Vol. IV of the Mammalia (vol. X overall), GOATS, SHEEP, OXEN, & c., frontispiece (John Hunter), vignette title page, and 31 hand-coloured plates; complete and in accordance with the contents page. Bound in contemporary half red calf with marbled covered boards, burgundy title label; binding good and strong with some rubbing, corners a little worn, spine faded. Contents clean and tight, plates clean and with their original tissue guards, a few pages at front and rear a little marked/spotted; no inscriptions, original end papers. A very good copy with superior hand-colouring. [note: the volume numbers to the engraved title page and the letterpress title page do not coincide - we have taken that to the engraved TP to mean the vol. no. of the Mammalia and that to the letterpress TP to mean the overal vol. no.]. Half Leather. Very Good. 12mo (11 x 17.0cm).
