A cheat's review as only three of the stories were read.
In The Hollywood I Remember by Lee Child, a Hollywood hit man looks back on the way the town was when he first started, and the hit that brought him to the attention of the police.
In Darkling by Val McDermid, a being currently posing as a criminal profiler learns the power of the written word.
Midwinter Interlude by Alexander McCall Smith is a short story in the Varg series which first appeared in the Strand Magazine in 2012. Inspector Varg of the Malmo Criminal Investigation Division, feels that forgiveness is an important quality for a detective to have. "Without forgiveness, our life is an empty cavern of ice." Towards Christmas, he takes two junior officers to lunch at his friend's restaurant, where there's an encounter with a known pickpocket. Fans of this series may note that Varg's personal history has at least four versions, depending on which iteration is being read, but that does not detract from this very first appearance of Ulf Varg, which is another delightful dose of Swedish blanc.
