(7.7 x 5.3 inches). 8 page publishers advert dated Autumn 1913. A very good copy in publishers green cloth binding with spine decorated and lettered in gilt, including the correct spelling of the publishers name at the bottom. Signed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper, Dated 1923. The top of the signed leaf and the half title page have a small indentation where a paper clip has been used.Aside from some light rubbing to the extremities this is a very good tight copy, the gilt on the spine still strong and bright. Loosely inserted is the front panel from the rare dustwrapper, showing a full colour illustration by J. Dewar Mills within a grey border. The whole panel dark blue with grey title and author. Important first book by feminist author Charlotte Haldane, 1894-1969. A rare early dystopian novel in which 'female reproduction is rigorously controlled within a rigid caste system ruled and regulated by the masculine figure of the scientist.' Gamble; in 'Gender and Science in Charlotte Haldane's A Man's World.' The Haldane family were well acquainted with the Huxleys, and this novel may have influenced Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World.' Indeed, they shared the same publisher, and Huxley's earlier works are listed in the catalogue at the rear of this volume. A rare book with a lasting legacy on science fiction and feminist dystopian literature, especially in the areas of eugenics and birth control.
