About This Item
First English Edition, First Printing. Translated from the Portuguese by Giovanni Pontiero. Saramago was a Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2003 Harold Bloom described Saramago as 'the most gifted novelist alive in the world today,' and in 2010 said he considers Saramago to be "a permanent part of the Western canon." More than two million copies of Saramago's books have been sold in Portugal alone and his work has been translated into 25 languages.
Fine in original black cloth and just about fine dust jacket, a touch faded at the spine and with a tiny nick at the head of the spine. Octavo. 14.5 x 22 cm. ix, 223 pp. A lovely copy.
Synopsis
Manual of Painting and Calligraphy was José Saramago’s first novel. Written eight years before the critically acclaimed Baltasar and Blimunda , it is a story of self-discovery set against the background of the last years of Salazar’s dictatorship. A struggling young artist, commissioned to paint a portrait of an influential industrialist, learns in the process about himself and the world around him. The brilliant juxtaposition of a passionate love story and the crisis of a nation foreshadows all of Saramago’s major works. A must-have for any devotee of the great Portuguese Nobel laureate, Manual of Painting and Calligraphy is available in the United States for the first time.
