Washington: Joseph Milligan and William Cooper, 1812. Second Edition. Leather. Good. Full calf leather. Pocket sized, 3.25" x 5". Spine ends are chipped, boards are scuffed and rubbed, corners are bumped. Title on spine is clear. Spine joint on front board is cracked. Binding, however, remains tight and square. The interior has scattered soiling and toning, as expected for its age. Previous owner's cursive penned name on front end paper and title page. The bottom right corner of the first free end paper is chipped off (about 1/2") and a few corners have been dog-eared. Otherwise, pages and text are unmarked. Pictures available upon request.

Description:
Washington City: Davis and Force, 1820. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octodecimo. 4 x 6.5 in. x, 220 pp. Good in a rebound leather binding and marbled boards that have rubbing throughout, wear to the corners and edges, and a split formed along the lower front hinge. The interior has foxing throughout, as is often found in books of this age, and a water stain that appears in the preface and first 25 pages.The binding itself is firm and the pages are otherwise in decent shape. A prior owner's book plate appears on the front interior board. An early edition published within Jefferson's lifetime and featuring his latest revisions and additions, including the then-newly revised rules and orders of the Senate and House of Representatives. Jefferson's first edition in 1801 was the first American text on parliamentary procedures.

Washington City: Printed by Samuel Harrison Smith, 1801.. [199]pp. 12mo. Antique-style mottled in calf, tooled in gilt, spine richly gilt, raised bands, gilt morocco label. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on front flyleaf and titlepage (see below). First seventy-nine pages hand-numbered in upper margin. Old stain on titlepage, continuing near gutter of first handful of leaves, else very good. In a half calf and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. The first edition of Jefferson's seminal work on parliamentary procedure - one of only three books he published in his lifetime (the others are NOTES ON THE STATE OF VIRGINIA, and his defense of his policy on the New Orleans batture, published in 1812). This copy bears the ownership signature on the titlepage of Jacob Holgate (1767-1832), a Pennsylvania politician and businessman, who was a member of the Democratic-Republican party and a supporter of Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Andrew Jackson.
