Paris: Chez Villier Libraire, 1800., 1800. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. F. First Edition. Octavo, original period binding half bound in calf over paper with red spine title label and panelled spine closely decorated in gilt. pp. (vii), (xv), 352 (iv). An early title in the seminal books by Peignot treating all aspects of bibliography. In the nature of a general introduction to book collecting and libraries. Including an essay "De la Bibliographie" followed by the "Traite des Bibliotheques Anciennes traduit du latin de Juste Lipse" and preceded by a "Notice preliminaires sur Juste Lipse et ses ouvrages" with a list of Lipse's works. There follows a "Notice Abregee des Principales Bibliotheques Modernes" including definitions of bibliographical details such as the names and sizes of printed pages. Next is a "Notice de la Classification des Livres" with an outline form "Systeme de Classification" a "Notice Abregee de l'origine de l'Art Typographiques" and classifications following categorized chronologically, bibliographically and by rarity with specific reference to many classic titles of the period. A key early comprehensive treatise on the collecting and classification of classic literature. A gently ex-library volume with blanked bookplate on pastedown, two small stamps on title page (not affecting text) and a short number stamp and notation on following page. Thereafter NO FURTHER MARKINGS but a notably fresh, bright, clean and undamaged text. Front board detached and spine detached along front edge. Text block, signatures and spine interior all sound and solid. Spine somewhat darkened but clear and legible. Small paper library sticker in one panel. A very good easily restorable copy of a very scarce title..
