About This Item
Wakefield: Richard Nicholls, January 1st, 1830.. Map dimensions 190 x 154 cm. A very large brightly hand coloured map of England, Wales and southern Scotland with the continuation to the north of Scotland in a large inset to the upper right corner, dissected into 54 sections and mounted on linen, all edges trimmed in brown silk, marbled paper panels to the folded end sections, housed within a contemporary book style two part box of tan full calf, spine with raised bands gilt lettered direct to three panels. Some mostly light wear to the case with a few small losses, an attractive example of a striking map. Though it precedes it by a year, the map was produced to accompany Joseph Priestley's work "Historical Account of the Navigable Rivers, Canals and Railways Throughout Great Britain." Very much a Yorkshire map, it was produced in concert by Walker, a local surveyor, Priestley and the publisher Nicholls, who jointly dedicated the map to the King at the foot. Engraved by two Wakefield printers, Franks and Johnson, it is an interesting snapshot of industrial Britain at this time, featuring the mineral and natural deposits across the country and, most pertinently, the means by which they could be distributed.
