About This Item

London: Robt. Sayer J. Bennett, No. 53 in Fleet St. , 1775. VG, scarce, striking chart. B&W as issued, mild general soiling, a couple of small stains, with a few small marginal tears (none over neatline) repaired verso with archival tape. Folds as issued. This is an enormous map, issued as 6 sheets (in this case 3 sheets, but each of those is a joined pair), with each of the 3 larger sheets measuring 43.5x18 inches (for a total image of 43.5x54 inches). Original outline color, with each sheet having its own heading. The first sheet is titled as the map. The second sheet is titled 'Chart, Containing the coasts of California, New Albion, and Russian Discoveries...'. The third sheet is 'Chart containing the greater part of the South Sea...'. On heavy paper, with a small stamp from the Free Library of Chester on verso. Detailed and relatively decorative for the times, with sailing ships showing major known routes of exploration (with the names of the explorers) to the Americas. This was from the 1776 edition of The American Atlas, published by Sayers and Bennett 5 years after Jefferys death (see Moreland and Bannister: ANTIQUE MAPS). Jefferys was perhaps best known for his maps of North America, and had been appointed Geographer to the Prince of Wales and George III. (State 3 according to Kershaw entry 450.).
