Washington: James B. Steedman, Printer, 1858. Volume I only. Near Very Good condition (see photos). A square, reasonably tight copy. Inner hinges are perfectly sound. Wear to the corners and spine ends, with one small chip at the rear hinge (see photo). Bound in the original brown cloth, with decorative blind stamping to the spine and boards, both front and rear. The spine is gilt-stamped "Message and Documents 1858-9, Part 1." Below the spine is blind-stamped "House Document." NOT a library discard. Previous owner's name on endpaper. NO underlining. NO margin notes. A small percentage of pages are age-toned or show light foxing. However the vast majority are clean with NO foxing. This is the House of Representatives version, 35th Congress, 2d session, Ex. Doc. No. 2. Altogether there are 750 pages (see photo #5). Title and credit in the map at upper right, good condition with some aging at folds. <br> Original slim 12mo dark green leather-covered board folder with gilt lettering at upper cover. Some scuffing and wear at edges. Additional smaller lithograph map with hand-colored highlights mounted at inside of upper cover. Lengthy 1858 pencil notation of purchase ("on the Field of Waterloo") from Cotton's niece on verso of map.

Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Light foxing on front free endpapers and title page. Previous owner's attribution stamped on front pastedown. A Western novel about a Mormon woman defending her ranch and the period conflicts between Mormons and Gentiles near the the southern Utah border as written by a classic American writer.

A bright copy of this uncommon publication of Simone Weil's (1909-1943) essay "Factory Work." During the years 1934-1935 ("hard and bitter years of economic crisis" in France), Weil set out to experience and document the "proletarian condition" of France's laborers in the factories of suburban Paris. As a result of her experiences Weil concluded that "our factories have become festering grounds of evil, and the evils of the factories must be corrected." Weil's essay records her appeal for the good over the useful, the qualitative over the quantitative, goodness over well-being-in sum, for a fundamental purpose over mere utilitarian function.
