Number 83 of 375 copies, folio size, [186] pp., signed by Neal Harlow and printer Grant Dahlstrom, sample leaf and prospectus laid in. A companion volume to author Neal Harlow's "Maps of San Francisco Bay", and to W. W. Robinson's "Maps of Los Angeles". The contents cover the cartographic history of the Los Angeles area, from the foundation of the Spanish pueblo in 1781 which gave rise to the first map of the town, to the final delivery of the patent to the city's lands in 1881.
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter green linen and decorative green and cream paper covered boards, gray endpapers, title-page in red and black, 14 facsimile maps and 2 views (11 are fold-out) of which two are stored at the rear pastedown, held in place by a strip of matching paper; Aldus, Bembo and Rosart types, Curtis Rag paper, folio size (12.75" by 8.75"), pagination: [i-viii] ix-xvii 1-169, limited edition, this number 83 of 375 copies, signed by Neal Harlow and printer Grant Dahlstrom; sample leaf (p. 62, map on verso) and typed prospectus on the letterhead of Dawson's Book Shop slipped in.
___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new.

A very fine copy. Beginning with a Spanish survey of 1781 and proceeding to an 1870 map, this magnificent book gives a detailed history of the mapping of Los Angeles. Along with his discussion the author describes 16 maps, of which 14 are illustrated in color. The appendices include a complete list of known maps of the city of Los Angeles.
