About This Item
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1860. First Edition, mixed state. Hardcover. Good. Octavo, 2 volumes, 283pp., 284pp. A good set in the publisher's brown cloth, stamped in blind. Both volumes very gently soiled, worn at the spine ends, and the signatures are a bit loose, but holding. Previous owner's inscription on a front free blank in vol. I. Spine of volume II cocked. Despite some mild age-toning and perhaps half a dozen stray pencil markings, internally a clean set. Rear free endpaper of vol. 1. seems to have been excised. Mixed issue, with the following issue points: In volume I: 16pp. of ads dated March 1860; Preface precedes Contents; This sentence appears on p. 225, line 22: "[...]a providence or purpose for Hilda, if on no other human creature.". In volume II: No conclusion chapter. Altogether a presentable set of an early state of this Hawthorne classic; in no way a fine example, but better than many copies in commerce.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
