About This Item

Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1887. 1887. Hardcover, brown binding, gilt lettering on spine, 527 pages. Top edge in gilt. Frontispiece with tissue overlay. This book was published as the Riverside Edition, Vol. VI, with introductory notes by George Parsons Lathrop. It was part of twelve volumes, this volume is a very popular work by Nathaniel Hawthorne. THIS IS NOT A FACSIMILE OR RECENT REPRINT, IT IS THE 1887 EDITION. Condition: Faint age toning, one preliminary sheet (two pages) partially separated from binding, else overall Very Good. Free of cracks and tears to binding, writing in text, old humidity stains or the smell of a smoker. Text is clear and very readable. Hawthorne finds an allegory of the fall of man from amoral innocence to the knowledge of good and evil, a theme the author has usually been assumed in his earlier works but that now received direct and philosophic treatment. The central metaphor is a statue of a faun Hawthorne has seen in Florence, Italy. An engaging novel. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly.. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket.
