Nato in Ungheria nel 1902, frequentò da giovane il Bauhaus, leggendario cubista del "modernismo" in Germania dal 1919 al 1928. Portò con sé la "rivoluzione" in Inghilterra negli anni Trenta e poi negli Stati Uniti nel 1937, dove raggiunse Walter Gropius alla Harvard Graduate School of Design.
