About This Item

Hardcover. Very Good. George Allen and Unwin, London, second impression, 1947; 8vo, pp 807; original green cloth, spine gilt; very slight fading on the spine and with some light browning of the end papers but otherwise a very good, clean and firm copy. First published in the US in 1938, the first UK edition was in 1939, immediate further printing being affected by the war. ... In his introduction, Ford writes about the work "It is the book of an old man mad about writing - in the sense that Hokusai called himself an old man mad about painting." Known particularly for his novels "The Good Soldier" and "Parade's End" Ford founded also the critical journals "The English Review" and "The Transatlantic Review", each of them highly influential in the development of modern literature during the early 20th century. He collaborated with Conrad and Hemingway and published Ezra Pound, W B Yeats, Wyndhgam Lewis, D H Lawrence, Thomas Hardy, Henry James and others, many for the first time. ... NOTE: the book weighs just over 1kg and so will attract a postage supplement on the default shown for overseas (but not UK) destinations, the exact amount depending on the destination.
