Dopler (C.E.D.) engraved titles (Erie with additional frontis map; Springfield with additional frontis engraving of the Amory), indexed text engravings (each volume) additionally by Lossing-Barritt [Benson John Lossing 1813-91 and William B. Barritt] and others. [pre-1858 early printing of] first thus edition. [c.1843 T.H. Carter, Boston as Marco Paul's Adventures in Pursuit of Knowledge &c]. Publisher dark pink backed red blind-stamped cloth, gilt stamped spines with double rule gilt at top and bottom (not gilt key design), cream end papers. Globe 8vo (17cm). pp. 192; 203, 4 Ads; 191, 208; 192. Very Good/No jackets, as issued. Sunned spines (to light pink), worn corners (fray check applied), edgewear and dots of ink stain; internally near fine with light overall page toning (Maine has foxed dot on 8 pages, Springfield has small stain on double frontis). Pencil signature and assumed 10th birthday gift of "Robert Morris Washburn, Jan. 4th, 1878" in all volumes (1/4/1868-1946), Harvard, Worcester lawyer and Calvin Coolidge biographer. Though previously issued by four different publishers (1843-48), each with many editions, the Harper series was the first to list the author. Preceding the Rollo series, Abbott's intent was to introduce fun into the study of geography, culture and travel in Northeast US upholding the period moral influence in a chapter book casting Marco (boy about 12 years); John Forester (Marco's cousin and travel tutor, about 19 years); Mr. Baron, a merchant of New York. Moral tales with fictitious characters in real period places. The set is sadly missing "In Boston", issued in 1853 with Springfield. Sold as a set..
