Frontis: portrait of Lady Kitty Bristol. Mrs. Humphrey Ward (Mary Augusta Arnold) was born in Tasmania, Australia in 1851, died in London in 1920. Her novels depict her rejection of a supernaturally oriented Christianity in favor of a strong social commitment and social improvement. Her novel "Robert Elsmere" (1888) is the best example of this belief. Her first works were controversial but she was a best-selling author by the turn of the 20th century This book is bound in blue cloth, black lettered; clean, spine rubbed, corners and edges with edgewear. Binding tight, backstrap loosened. Pages clean, unmarked, age-toned. Former owner name, date, on endpaper. Inner hinge cracked. Lower corner has damp stain showing on text block edges and on the lower corner of some pages. Rear endpapers foxed. 563 pages. 5 x7.5 inches. 6 pages of "Famous copyright books in popular priced editions" at the end of the book. 1905, Grosset & Dunlap, New York, New York, USA
