Inscribed to Edvard Beneš (1884-1948) Czech statesman who at the time served as the Foreign Minister of Czechoslovakia and later became the President of the state. The acquaintance of the two is dated back to the mid 1910s when Čapek, as university student, attended Benes' lectures on American pragmatism.
Karel Čapek (1890-1938) was a Czech novelist best known for his science fiction novels, and mostly for his play "R.U.R." that introduced the word "robot".
